Ft. Monroe in Hampton, VA is a famous US fort that never fell to Confederate soldiers during the Civil War despite being in the south!

I would not be surprised if the moat surrounding Ft. Monroe helped defend it from capture.

Slaves would try to make their way to the fort to get their freedom.

Virginia is for Lovers is a famous tourism slogan for the Old Dominion!  Virginia Beach is one of the most popular sites in the state for people to visit.  This Atlantic beach town has a decent boardwalk and many hotels along the waterfront.  Nearby, there is a cool historic lighthouse called the Cape Henry Lighthouse which was built in the 1700s.  Nearby, there is the famous Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel system which takes travelers across the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay to peninsula side of Virginia.  Also, there are the cities of Hampton and Newport News.  Hampton has a cool historic fort called Ft. Monroe which never was surrendered from the Union to the Confederacy.  President Jefferson Davis was incarcinated here after the Civil War for some time.  Newport News is known for building naval submarines and ships.
