Mount Vernon & Fredericksburg, VA

  1
This is the mansion at Mount Vernon where President George Washington lived with his wife, Martha.

There is a museum also at Mount Vernon dedicated to our first President!

1
Fredericksburg is known for having many famous battles during the Civil War.  These are cannons from the Confederate line.

2
There was a battle along the "sunken road" in Fredericksburg.  On that hill, the house is from that era and served many purposes including a hospital for the wounded.

3
This pyramid was erected as a monument to the Confederate soldiers who died.

4
I thought I would do a re-enactment of the Civil War for my wife when I was by the corn fields.  I got that Confederate soldier hat for my nephew.

5
General Stonewall Jackson held this hill from a barrage from Union troops!

6
The Confederate cannons on Prospect Hill can be seen in the distance here.

After touring the battlefields, one can cool off with some classic frozen custard at Carl's in Fredericksburg!

Mount Vernon was home to the first President of the United States, George Washington.  This massive plantation was built on the banks of the Potomac River not too far from Washington DC.  Although there were slaves on the plantation, President Washington was known for being kind to them.  He also set them free when he died in his will.  The mansion is very large and has a lot of fireplaces, but they only have two chimneys.  So, the fireplaces all feed into the two chimneys.  That is pretty cool technology for the 1700s!  I liked the museum on site too that was dedicated to the life of President Washington.

Not too far from Mount Vernon is Fredericksburg, VA.  This strategic city was between the two capital cities during the Civil War so many battles were faught here including ones led by General Lee and Stonewall Jackson.  One can tour the battlefields and see cannons from back then on the historic national lands.
