Michigan's
Upper Peninsula is accessible from the other part of Michigan via the
Mackinac Bridge. This mostly rural part of Michigan borders Lake
Huron, Lake Superior, and Lake Michigan. The area has lots of
lighthouses as well along the shores of the Great Lakes. Sault
St. Marie is a city in UP that borders the US and Canada. The US
and Canadian sides both have locks which allow ships to pass between
Lake Superior and Lake Huron since there is an elevation drop from Lake
Superior on the St. Mary's River. Sault St. Marie has some fudge
shops as well as a great seafood restaurant near the locks. The
people of the UP called themselves "Yoopers."
