"UP" or Upper Peninsula of Michigan

   1
The Soo Locks of Sault St. Marie allow ships to pass from Lake Superior to Lake Huron via the St. Mary's River which has a 21 foot elevation drop.

2
The locks are opening here so a boat can pass from Lake Superior to Lake Huron.  The Army Corps of Engineers operates the locks.

3
Sault St. Marie is on the border between the US and Canada.  They have some fudge shops up there also.

This is the Point Iroquis Light House on Lake Superior.

Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes.  It looked violent!  This lake has claimed many shipwrecks too.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula is accessible from the other part of Michigan via the Mackinac Bridge.  This mostly rural part of Michigan borders Lake Huron, Lake Superior, and Lake Michigan.  The area has lots of lighthouses as well along the shores of the Great Lakes.  Sault St. Marie is a city in UP that borders the US and Canada.  The US and Canadian sides both have locks which allow ships to pass between Lake Superior and Lake Huron since there is an elevation drop from Lake Superior on the St. Mary's River.  Sault St. Marie has some fudge shops as well as a great seafood restaurant near the locks.  The people of the UP called themselves "Yoopers."
