Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in Canada, yet it is one of the most important provinces in the history of Canada.  The Articles of Confederation which created the Dominion of Canada were signed in Charlottetown in 1867.  These articles united the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Canada under the British Crown as a dominion.  The island is also known as the "garden of the gulf" since it is very green and has lots of agriculture versus other areas of the St. Lawrence Gulf which are so frozen and cold!  Do not get me wrong.  Prince Edward Island has rough winters also, but they do have a large diary industry.  The capital city if Charlottetown.  PEI is known for both oysters and mussels.  Local craft breweries are found throughout the Atlantic Provinces of Canada, and the Gahan House Brewery in Charlottetown is a famous one.  The island is also known for the Cow's Creamery, which is often called the best ice cream in Canada!  PEI is most widely known for the inspiration behind Anne of Green Gables, a book by Lucy Maud Montgomery which lived on the island.
