1
We had a direct flight from Sacramento to Kailua-Kona International Airport (KOA).  Kona is an outdoor airport so we deplaned via the stairs.

2
Would you like us to upgrade you to a Dodge Challenger sports coupe, Mr. Roy?  OF COURSE!  LOL.

3
A friend of mine suggested we get an island style plate lunch at Pine Tree Cafe near the Kona Airport.  The island plate has rice, a meat dish, and of course mac salad!

4
Next door to Pine Tree Cafe was the Kona Mountain Coffee store so we had to get some 100% Kona coffee!

5
After arriving at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, we checked in via the Priority Check-In for us Hilton VIPs!

6
The Hilton Waikoloa Village is so large there is a boat to take guests around.

7
There is a tram also to get guests around the three towers and convention center.  We took the tram to the Palace Tower.

8
Here is a view of the Palace Tower from the tram as we approached.

9
We got an upgrade to an ocean view room.  This is what we saw outside our balcony!

10
There are two pools at the resort.  I headed out to the closest pool to our tower after unpacking.  They had Terra Cota Warrior Statues with animal heads.

11
The water temperature was just right.  This pool had cool water slides also!

12
Joy got me a pina colada to enjoy in the pool!  Aloha!

13
After my refreshing swim, we walked down to the lagoon on the property.

14
We had an amazing view of the sunset from our balcony!

15
For dinner, we went to Sansei at the Queen's Market at the Waikoloa Village.  Their sushi was great!

16
Since there was a shaved ice place next door, "when in Rome?"  LOL.  One knows the saying.

17
For a night cap, we went to the Kona Tap Room at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.  There was live music too!

58
We woke up to this beautiful view from our balcony the next morning!

18
The next morning, we enjoyed a nice walk around the resort to explore all the great Asian themed art work before breakfast.

19
Mortal Kombat with Goro?  LOL.  I could not resist getting this pose.  That is not Goro.  It is a Japanese temple guard.

20
That is a cool shot of the Palace Tower in the background with the tram making its way towards the Convention Center stop.

21
As a Diamond guest, we got a Daily $36 dining credit each way, but this breakfast was way more than that.  LOL.  I liked the Nutella pancakes!  They were super fluffy!

22
We thought the Waikoloa Coffee Company would have 100% Kona beans, but they had a blend of Kona beans in their coffee.  This shop was by the Hilton Grand Vacations area of the resort.

29
We took the tram back to the lobby area so we could go see the dolphins later that morning.  This is a cool Budda statue.

24
The lagoon at the resort had lots of sea turtles!  They are protected so one should give them their space.

23
This was the large waterfall by the lagoon.

25
I was amazed at how many dolphins they had at the resort.

26
The dolphins were really playful!

27
We caught the feeding time also for the dolphins.

28
That one dolphin in the background is doing a back swim!

30
We walked over to the Makai Pool next.  I am standing on a rope bridge over the pool area.

31
This is a great view of Maui on the other side of the massive channel.

38
We went to the lagoon afterwards to relax and get in the water!

39
I tried to snorkel, but the water was too murky.

40
It was fun to swim in the lagoon however!

32
We went to A-Bay's Hawaiian restaurant for lunch at the King's Shops nearby our resort.

33
A-Bays had a great bar also with Fireball on tap!  I have to take a picture of Fireball for a buddy of mine who loved that when it was super popular a few years back.

34
The bartender made me a great whiskey cocktail.

35
I got the fresh daily catch blackened Ono sandwich with a side of the mac salad!  It was delicious!

36
This place has the best shaved ice on the island!  Look at that long line to get in to order!

37
The shaved ice was worth the wait!  I got their Kimrah flavor which had ube ice cream with a coconut syrup and haupia (coconut pudding) and mochi topping!

41
I went paddleboarding after lunch.  Joy decided to kayak in the lagoon.

42
I was amazed at how good I was at paddleboarding.

43
Joy is coming back after we saw sea turtles in the lagoon!

44
We headed out to dinner at Ulu at the Four Seasons Resort near Kona that evening.

45
One of the pediatric pulmonologists I meet with suggested this amazing seaside restaurant!

46
We had a little too much sun in our eye at first from our table, but it was worth it later.  One will see why!

47
I started off with Whistle Pig 12 for about a $55 pour.  LOL.  I love being well off!

48
That fan keeps the flies away!  Classy!

49
This was the best octopus that we ever had!  Ulu prepares it on the charcoal grill that is brought to the table!

50
The amberjack sashimi was DELICIOUS too!

51
It was worth having the sun in our face for a little bit to watch the beautiful sunset!

52
As the sun head down, a guy lit the tiki torches by hand.

53
The dude also blew a conch shell!

54
My entree was a fresh fish of the day which was like a red snapper.

55
The dessert was a raspberry and coconut soufle served with macnut ice cream!  We had to order it about thirty minutes in advance!

56
One of the staff at the restaurant took amazing picures of couples on the private beach at the resort.  Ulu was really worth the money!

57
The final treat that evening were these cookies that they brought us.  We spent over $300 that night!

59
We had breakfast at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Nui Restaurant again the next morning.  I got a $18 parfait.  LOL.

60
After the bellman got our luggage, the valet had the Challenger brought up for us so we could leave the resort for the Hilo side.

61
The steering wheel on the Challenger looked similiar to my Jeep Cherokee company car since Chrysler owns both brands.

62
We are ready to head out for the rainy side of the island!

63
We asked the hotel for a recommendation for a local coffee shop so we went to Country Grounds in Waimea!

64
They served a chocolate espresso bean with each handcrafted coffee drink!

65
We went to lunch at Ippy's Japanese BBQ for another island plate lunch!  I got teriyaki chicken and ono with the mac salad and rice!

66
We found the famous Malasada stand as we were leaving Waimea for Akaka Falls!  This place was on many TV shows!

67
The malasadas are fresh made filled donuts with powdered sugar!  YUM!

68
We had a hike to the Akaka Falls through a lush tropical forest.

69
The forest was nice to hike through, but it was pretty humid that day.  There are no snakes in Hawaii too!

70
The hike was well worth it to see the beautiful Akaka Falls on the eastern side of the Big Island of Hawaii!

71
On the way to Hilo, we found a fruit stand that sold ice cold pineapple and coconut water!

72
Joy and I both loved the ice cold sweet coconut water!

73
We went to Rainbow Falls after we got into Hilo.  It was not as tall as Akaka Falls.

74
We stayed at the iconic Grand Naniloa Hotel in Hilo.

75
This is a cool hula dancer statue off the lobby at the Grand Naniloa.  It was sunny when we got into Hilo.

77
The front desk gave us a bunch of coupons for the free welcome drink, which was called the Big Island Breeze.

76
Here is a nice view of Coconut Island in the distance from our hotel.  Note the clouds are coming in.

78
We got upgraded to an ocean view 1 bedroom suite!  The whole property has pictures of hula dancers by a famous photographer.

79
There was a bath tub off the living room as well.

80
And this is why!  Look at that amazing view from the living room of Hilo Bay.  Note:  More clouds are coming in!

81
The bedroom was decent sized, and we had an ocean view from there too.

82
I got in the water near the hotel to see what it was like.  Overall, the water was temperate.  I saw some fish in that little lagoon area.

83
This is a picture of the main towers from the water.

84
Here is another view of the property from the water.

85
The reason I kept mentioning the clouds is because the Hilo side of the island gets lots of rain!  The storm came in as I went to work out in the fitness center.

86
Once the storm passed, people went outside again to enjoy the warm weather.  Hilo is very "tropical."

87
We had dinner reservations at WSW Steakhouse that night.  The restaurant was walking distance from our hotel, but we drove since it can rain anytime in Hilo!

88
WSW was pretty upscale for the Hilo side of the island.

89
The beverage cart had lots of great whiskey.  I got the Colorado Strathan's whiskey neat in a Glencairn glass.

90
I got a filet mignon and lobster tail for my dinner that night.

91
It was raining again the next morning when we went to breakfast at the hotel.

92
We went to the Hawaii Volcanos National Park after breakfast.  This is the eruption zone where the volcano is erupting now.

93
This is another view of the eruption zone.  We saw some red from a distance which is the lava shooting up.

94
We hiked through another rain forest to get to an old lava tube.

95
This is the entrance to the lava tube.  My parents and brother went through here with me back in 1997 also.

96
The inside of the lava tube is pitch dark without any light.

97
The dark spots on the hill are the old lava flows from different eruptions of Kilauea!

98
That is the famous sea arch.  One can tell it was really windy by the southern coastline of the island.

99
That is the eruption site from 1979.

100
We went to the Hilo Farmer's Market after we toured the volcanoes.  I got another fresh coconut to drink!

103
That is the downtown Hilo area.

101
The Queen Liliuokalani Park in Hilo was a cool Japanese garden!

102
We loved walking around the Japanese garden.

106
We went to Coconut Island after the garden.  People are jumping off that stone platform in the back.

104
For dinner, we went to a great Japanese place called Miyo's.

105
They had some amazing sashimi with ponzu jelly!

107
I needed to get one more Hawaiian shaved ice so I asked for the best place in Hilo for it.  Kula was recommended by the hotel.

108
They make their syrups in house also.  That haupia pudding on top was great!

109
We had to get some fresh poke and mac salad also at the Hilo Farmer's Market before we went to the airport.

110
The Hilo (ITO) Airport reminded me a little of Maui which is indoor and outdoor.  They did have jet bridges here unlike Kona.

Since we could not go to Hawaii during the Covid bull shit since their idiot Governor had the island closed off or required a negative test to enter, we decided to take full advantage of Hawaii being fully opened to tourism in 2022!  So, we went back to the Hawaii for Labor Day after our nice trip to Maui a month before for the 4th of July.  Southwest had direct flights to Honolulu, Maui, and Kona from Sacramento so it was an easy flight for us to get there!  Although I went to the Big Island with my family back in 1997, Joy had not been there yet so I booked a nice trip out to relax on the Kona side and go on some adventures on the Hilo side of the Big Island of Hawaii!  Aloha!

After we arrived on the Big Island, we got our Dodge Challenger muscle car rental and headed over to the Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort after a nice island style plate lunch near the airport.  I love the island plates with chicken, rice, and of course mac salad!  Once we arrived at the massive resort, the valet took the car, and we checked into the Palace Tower of the resort.  There were three main towers at the property, and one could take a tram or boat to get around the huge complex.  Although the coastline had no beach, the resort had a lagoon which had a beach area.  Since I am a Diamond guest, we got upgraded to a nice oceanview room with a balcony.  We also got a daily $36 dining credit too.  I decided to use points for this stay since I had over a million HHonors points, and the rate was around $700 or more per night so the points were well worth it for this redemption!  We had plenty of time to chill at the resort that first day.  I checked out one of the pool areas and got to go down the waterslide.  Joy got me the usual pina colada also as I swam around in the beautiful oblong pool with cool statues all around it.  For dinner, we went to Sansei, which is a great sushi restaurant in the Waikoloa Village.  Afterwards, we had a nightcap at the Kona Tap Room at our resort.

The next morning, we explored the cool Asian art work at the resort before having breakfast at the outdoor Nui restaurant.  We were able to go see the dolphins play also at the resort.  I was able to snorkel in the lagoon and just chill on the chairs that were partially in the water.  Joy and I enjoyed another island style lunch at A-Boy's in the village before getting the best shaved ice on the island at OBISIC.  I loved the "Kimra" creation they had there which was Ube ice cream with shaved ice that had coconut syrup.  It was topped with haupia and mochi!  We had time to snorkel and kayak in the lagoon after lunch, and we saw a lot of sea turtles in the water!  That night, we went to a fine dining restaurant called Ulu at the Four Seasons Kona.  The food and ambiance was amazing!

We headed to the Hilo side the next day via Waimea.  In Waimea, we saw rural Hawaii, and the clouds were passing by so low since we were up there in elevation.  We tried the delicious malasadas, which are like filled donuts.  On the Hilo side, we explored two water falls that day including Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls before checking into the iconic Grand Naniloa Hotel in Hilo.  We got upgraded to an amazing one bedroom suite with a great view of Hilo Bay.  The suite even had a cool modern bath tub in the living room to take in the view!  I had a chance to swim in the rocky water front and hotel pool before working out as the typical rain storm rolled in.  After the storm passed, we enjoyed dinner at the WSW Steakhouse in Hilo.

The next morning started off rainy as well.  We went to the Hawaii Volcanos National Park after breakfast at the hotel.  There was a great viewing spot for the eruption zone where we saw little red sparks which we think was lava!  As we drove around the park, we could see evidence of the many eruptions there with the old lava flows and volcanic craters!  After getting back to Hilo, we explored the downtown area including the Hilo Farmer's Market.  I got another coconut to drink.  That night, we went to a great Japanese restaurant called Miyo's.  We loved the sashimi!

I craved one more shaved ice before leaving Hawaii the next day so we went to Kula Shaved Ice at the Farmer's Market.  After getting poke for lunch, we stopped at a local Starbucks to get their 100% Kona beans to bring home.  Another great Hawaii trip was in the books!  We loved it!  Aloha for now!
